Reflection

Pursuing this global learning journey has increased my global awareness. It has opened my mind to the many issues that are happening abroad and to the world around me. I feel a deeper understanding and connectivity of my global engagement and the role that I play to make a difference in the world around me. I would like to pursue a career in medicine. Many countries are currently facing difficulties where citizens are unable to receive adequate healthcare or health insurance. I have a passion to help others and I am motivated to helping underserved and underrepresented individuals within the medical field. I have a responsibility to become a lifelong leader who can motivate and encourage others to pursue their dreams. I would like to provide mentorship to passionate students within the medical field who would like to pursue a career as a physician assistant. Being president of the Association of Pre-Physician Assistants has been truly rewarding. I have made some lifelong friendships with different individuals who come from different cultural backgrounds. This leadership experience increased my global perspective and improved my communication skills, my ability to effectively make decisions, and my ability to think critically. 

I have the first-hand experience of how it feels to struggle and to be less fortunate. Due to being a first-generation college student in my family who came from Haiti. Growing up from a Haitian background was tough to adapt to in the United States as not many people were too fond of Haitian where I grew up. We have to quickly adapt to their ways and learn many new things that were different from our culture and traditions. I thought that global awareness and learning meant to be about past and current events of the world, but I have learned that it has to do with what changes you are willing to make in your community and how it will impact members of your community. It all starts locally. I will continue to use the skills and tools that I have gained throughout this whole journey and plan to be culturally sensitive to my patients. I hope that I can make a difference in the lives of others. My global experiences have strengthened my determination to advocate for health equity and equality. This should apply across all borders and each person deserves to be healthy. 

I enjoyed learning about different religions and cultures and hope to be able to pass on the information that I acquired to my daughter. She is already a bilingual child with a Haitian background. I hope to be able to travel abroad and expand my knowledge of these cultures and their traditions. I hope to apply all the skills I acquire from each walk in life and being able to bring it back to my global awareness and engagement. 

I plan to continue to keep myself up to date on global issues that other countries are facing and going through. We are currently in a global pandemic and I have seen on the news and read plenty of articles to see how each country is handling these cases of the coronavirus. It is a scary world we are living in at the moment, but each country is trying its hardest to contain the virus and to limit the spread of the virus. Participating in an independent research study regarding the coronavirus has increased my global awareness and perspective. It has also given me direct exposure to the medical and political aspects that this virus continues to affect. Despite this, we know that everyone is working hard to limit the spread of the virus and to keep its citizens safe. 

Pursuing this Global learning Medallion is a great achievement for me. Being a Global Learner has improved my self-awareness, learning, and personal development. All the courses I have taken have prepared me for the real world and what is to come for the future. I now have a different perspective and understanding of the world around me. I have been equipped with the tools to become a global citizen and to be an active member of my community. I thank Florida International University for my global learning journey to become a global learner where I can extend a helping hand to anyone in need. I have become proud of the growth I have exhibited and look forward to what the future has in store for me.
